Year in Manicures: 2019

It's almost 2021 and I'm FINALLY through my backlog of posts from 2019!! /cries

Looking at my 2018 year in review post, I said there that you could tell how busy I had been since I was writing the review post in March - I wonder how busy that means I was this year since I'm writing this post literally almost a year late...

Despite how far behind I fell with posts, I did manage to paint 70 designs for myself in 2019, as well as 12 videos for CutePolish (I'm a part of the team on Sandi's channel if you didn't know!).
Out of those 70 designs, I'm going to take a quick look back at my nine favourites from the year!

Designs are listed in chronological order; click the date under the title to check out the full posts.

Bear Day (EXO Kai Bday)

Historically, I've never really felt the need to do anything for idols' birthdays, but this year the idea of painting Rilakkuma for Jongin's birthday popped into my head and just wouldn't leave. This little bear also went on to inspire my long-running Character Cuticles series, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Purr-fect Love

The second addition to my Character Cuticles series! I loved all of the designs in this series so I limited myself to only including two in my year end list - I went with Pusheen as my second design because I just couldn't get over how cute this little kitty looked!

I Can't Be-Leaf

As soon as I painted this design I knew it would be one of my favourites of the year. There's just something about the matte pink painted with the non-topcoatted green leaves - I don't know if it's the depth, the colour harmony, the design itself... Whatever it is, I still love this design a lot!

Boy With Luv (BTS)

The first (comeback) kpop design on the list this year is Boy With Luv! I struggled a bit with designing this set, but I love how coordinated it looks colour-wise even though it's ridiculously busy. I'm thankful that I ended up trying to write "LOVE" on the index and middle nail even though I wasn't going to, because I think it really pulled the whole design together!

Love in Colour

I'm so happy this design got so much love on IG. It's a combination of two different designs I painted in the past - one rainbow one and one for Valentines day. I think everything came together perfectly in this design to make an understated, class Pride look!

Drippin'

Something about rainbow, neon, matte, and negative space just screams summer to me. Drip nails are always fun, and this bright, in your face colour combination upped the fun-factor even more. Honestly I wish I could have just worn these nails all summer, I loved them that much!

What a Life (EXO-SC)

As much as I loved negative space designs this year, I also seemed to have a soft spot for bright designs. This EXO-SC What a Life design was everything I wanted for a bright, fun, summery design. Painting mini portraits of Chanyeol and Sehun was definitely a challenge, but I'm so happy with how it turned out!

Gucci Boy

This design really just hits everything for me - you've got Kai, you've got fashion, you've got negative space; you've got cool textured stuff and you've even got some intricate detail work. Will I ever paint another design that brings together so many of my favourite things? Stay tuned to find out!

Dear My Dear (Shall We?)

Finally, we have CHEN's Dear My Dear nails! I loved both of Jongdae's albums this year, but this design stood out to me specifically because of how pretty and bold the colours were. This design definitely challenged me with all of the little tiny details in the buildings, but I absolutely loved wearing this set!

And that brings us to the end of my favourite designs from 2019! It was so hard to decide on only nine designs for the whole year - I actually brought a list of 18 designs with me to Calgary and had to narrow it down while I was there.

What was your favourite design of 2019? Did it show up here, or was it maybe one from my 2019BestNine on IG?

I wanted to thank everyone again for loving my designs this past year and for so many years before. It really means the world to me, and I love having the privilege of seeing my work inspiring other young artists 💕 Here’s to another year of nail art; I hope you’ll all stick around for the ride 💅🏻✨

xo,
Becca.
