UN Village

Originally posted on July 18th, 2019.

There were a lot of quality albums released in 2019, but I have to say that one of my favourites (if not my number one album) of the year was Baekhyun's first solo, City Lights. The lead single, UN Village, which this design is inspired by, remains one of my favourite songs.

More on the design in a minute, but first, the album. The R&B style that Baekhyun went for really suits his voice and is completely my style - I had this album on repeat for at least a solid week after it was released. I loved watching all of the live performances of UN Village, and the way that eris modified the fanchant to be Baekhyunnie instead of Byun Baekhyun was so cute! Out of the b-sides, my favourite was definitely Betcha, but they're honestly all bops.
As I'm writing this post significantly after the fact, I can also mention that it was so awesome to be able to see Baek perform both UN Village and Betcha live at SuperM's concert in Vancouver (Feb 2020). If you want to check out a short clip of his UN Village stage, you can check out my fancam of it here.

Now onto the actual design. I had a bit of trouble planning this set. I had to watch the video over and over (which, let's be real, wasn't particularly a hardship) to find scenes that I could turn into a design, and in the end I really only used two and a half scenes.
The middle nail, which is a map of lower Seoul, and the ring finger nail, which is a silhouette of Baekhyun, are both taken from the music video. The thumb nail is partially inspired by the lit up sign at the beginning and end of the mv, but I didn't feel like adding the lightbulbs to the letters would work well. For the index and pinky nail I turned to the City Lights album covers - the index finger uses part of the Day version cover, while the pinky is from the Night version.

I decided halfway through editing the photos of this look that the bridges on the map needed to be a darker grey (you couldn’t really see the lighter shade that it was before) so I had to stop and make that change. Once that was done, I then proceeded to stress edit 3 different shots of the same pose because the glare was weird in different ways in all of them 🙃 So that was a bit of a stressful night, but in the end I think it was worth it!

Without a doubt, the silhouette is my favourite part of this design, but the index/pinky nails come in a close second!
