DNA

Hey guys! A little while ago BTS came back with their latest album Love Yourself: Her, and I wanted to do a nail design inspired by the music video for their promotional track DNA!

A lot of the time with music videos I'm kind of grasping at straws trying to find aspects of the video that I can turn into a design, but I had the opposite challenge with this song. The video was so aesthetic and basically every scene change left me with a new idea for a nail. The challenge here was taking all of that inspiration, sketching it out and then narrowing down all of my individual ideas into a single, cohesive design.

The design element that I chose to latch onto for this set was the purple galaxy shots. As much as I wanted to include other elements like bright colour blocking and splatter, based on the nails I had sketched out I thought that these designs would offer the best reflection of the music video.
In keeping with the galaxy theme, I chose to use a shot of the moon for the index finger nail. I thought that the black and white would fit well with the black/white used in two of the galaxy nails while breaking up the purple a little bit.
I also took on the challenge of painting the logo from BTS' album cover, which features a flower made up of a gradient line. My proportions ended up a little off here, but I think it still turned out pretty decently regardless!

When I first looked at the album cover I wasn't 100% sure how I was going to work with the gradient. Most of the gradients I've done in the past are sponged onto the nail but that wasn't going to work here since the lines were so thin. I ended up just switching between colours while I was painting which worked out pretty well - the colours look pretty well blended for the most part!

As I began to paint the galaxy portion of this design I realized that it's been so long since I last painted galaxy nails that I almost forgot how to do them! I started sponging pink polish straight onto the purple before realizing that I needed white first for the colour to show up correctly. I'm also used to using a shimmer polish as a base for galaxy prints which means I don't have to worry about painting all the little stars, but this time I started out with a metallic base and then had to figure out how I wanted to approach the star situation. I ended up borrowing from my EXO Power design and added a bunch of little tiny white dots all over. The glowing pink and blue stars are also something I've never done in a galaxy design before but I think they really elevate the whole look and make it more visually appealing!

If you're interested in recreating this design or just want to see the process behind it, I filmed a tutorial for it which you can check out below! If you do recreate this design for yourself please remember to credit me and tag your pics with #looknyanails so that I can see them!

Enjoy!
