Ah, IDOL. What an interesting music video. I'm pretty sure the first time I watched it I sat there questioning what the artistic director was on while coming up with the concept. After watching it many, many more times to plan out this design, I was still kind of feeling a bit overwhelmed by just how much stuff was going on. 🤷♀️
I did, however, end up narrowing things down and picking out some specific scenes that I felt showcased the overall vibe of the mv.
My first choice for the design was obviously the album cover. I've painted the album covers from the past two LY albums, so painting this one finished off the trilogy.
I wanted to use the colour scheme from the album cover on another nail to keep things kind of consistent, so I decided to use it for the background on the pinky. I waffled back and forth on whether to paint the Chinese character in black or white, but in the end I decided that black would tie it in with the three remaining nails better.
I chose to use the two rainbow mannequins as inspiration for the index and middle nails because they were a succinct was of capturing how colourful and bright the music video was.
Lastly, I wanted to include one of the traditional painting scenes because I felt like they were important to the video. I had initially planned on using the red scene from 2:31, but my friend Joanne convinced me to save that scene to use for a full set of Chuseok nails (which I did end up doing - those nails will be posted here soon!).
Instead, I decided to go with the blue scene from 3:07 which ended up working better with the colour scheme anyways!
