Call Me Baby

It's almost Easter but here I am doing non-Easter related designs, whoops. I had to do a design for Exo's comeback though, so Easter nails got put off for a few days. Instead I have these cool, graphic nails for you today!

Ok, so some background on this design before anyone starts looking at me like " Why are you writing that on your nails?"
If you've been following me for a while you may have noticed me mention "exo" in a few of my previous designs (Pathcode, L(ove), Overdose, etc. etc.). Exo, if you don't follow them, are an idol group from South Korea and this design is based off of their latest single Call Me Baby. More specifically, this is based off of a shirt that one of the members, Chen, wears for like 0.5 seconds in the music video. So yes, I'm definitely not trying to ask anyone to call me baby (please don't, it would probably be weird lol).

I had such a hard time figuring out what I was going to do for this comeback since the mv was very dance-focused and didn't really have anything in it that I could latch onto and turn into a nail design. I started out just focusing on exo's logo for this comeback and my original idea was to paint different stages of it turning on each of my nails, like this:

I was actually completely ready to go with this plan and started painting it, but I got to the second nail and my proportions were just way off and it looked like a mess so I decided to scrap that idea and head back to the drawing board.

My next plan was to paint little chains of the logo, which I also tried out, but that idea was short lived because I wasn't super pleased with the aesthetics of it.

I finally sat myself down with the music video again, determined to find anything in it that I could turn into a design and finally found my answer with this shirt that Chen wears for (literally) 3 seconds at the beginning of the K-version:

And with that my four hour journey of painting letters began (doing lettering on nails always looks so easy until you start doing it and it takes forever because you have to make sure all of your lines are completely straight...).

I'm pretty pleased with how this came out though. It's a lot less subtle than some of my other designs, but I think it fits well with the style of the mv (here's a link to it in case I've somehow piqued your curiosity), and I love how graphic and streamlined it looks!

Easter designs will hopefully be up on either Saturday or Sunday; happy long weekend to everyone!

After much procrastinating I finally sat down to film a tutorial for this design! If you decide to recreate this design please remember to credit me and if you're posting your photos on Instagram or Tumblr, please tag them with #looknyanails so I can see all of your pretty recreations!

  1. It was really worth those 4 hours because damn! those lines are straight! I'm glad you explained a bit about Exo, I didn't know them but it's nice to get some background for some of your designs :) I also LOVE that crown-ish midi ring on your middle finger! <3

    1. Ahhh, thanks Robin! Yeah, I figured it was probably time to offer a bit more explanation on them haha! And yess, I love the ring too, I picked it up on campus! ^^
